The initiative addresses one of the key issues in artificial intelligence (AI), for the aerospace industry and beyond: certification.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Compared to traditional computing \u2013 where the programmer tells the machine what to do to solve a task \u2013 in machine learning it is the machine itself that weaves its way. The programmer provides the computer with a large amount of data and a problem to solve. This makes it difficult to fully understand the path taken by the machine and, therefore, it is almost impossible to guarantee that the systems developed are flawless. \u201cThis inability to explain and certify AI systems limits their use, especially in critical systems such as on-board aircraft systems, as well as in a host of areas where the life and safety of people are at stake,\u201d explains Fran\u00e7ois Laviolette, professor and director of the Big Data Research Center at Universit\u00e9 Laval and scientist in charge of the DEEL-Quebec project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Over the next 5 years, 20 research teams from 5 Quebec universities (Polytechnique Montreal, UQAM, Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al, McGill University and Universit\u00e9 Laval) will work alongside four Quebec giants in the aerospace sector (Thales Canada, CAE, Bombardier and Bell Textron Canada), together with the support of the Consortium for Research and Innovation in Aerospace in Quebec (CRIAQ) and IVADO to meet this challenge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nouvelles.ulaval.ca\/recherche\/lintelligence-artificielle-au-cur-des-aeronefs-2ccb672f484577cbebaf0f8054e30e8e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read more on ULaval Nouvelles &gt;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"With a financial package of 7.5M, the Quebec component of the DEEL (DEpendable &amp; Explainable","protected":false},"featured_media":190,"template":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/deel.quebec\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/actualites\/579"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/deel.quebec\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/actualites"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/deel.quebec\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/actualites"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/deel.quebec\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/190"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/deel.quebec\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=579"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
